This sector has been implicated in the smuggling and corruption scandal surrounding Raimbek Matraimov, the former deputy chairman of the State Customs Service. <\/span>Our editorial board demands that the relevant authorities take the possible conflict of interest seriously. <\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z6fYNEe0-tk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The day before, on February 11, the Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek considered the case of Matriamov, which was initiated following a series of international <a href=\"https:\/\/www.occrp.org\/en\/the-matraimov-kingdom\/\">investigative news<\/a> reports. According to journalists from Radio Azattyk \u2013 the Kyrgyz service of Radio Free Europe\/Radio Liberty (RFE\/RL) \u2013 the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and Kloop.kg. According to these news reports, Matraimov has overseen corruption schemes that have cost the Kyrgyz state upwards to 700 million USD.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the 20-minute session, Matraimov admitted his guilt and agreed to work with an official investigation. The court declared then declared that he had paid back around 24 million USD (2 billion KGS). After being subjected to a fine of 3000 USD (260 thousand KGS), the former customs official then left the courthouse a free man.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But who is <\/span><b>Orozbek Berdibaev<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the prosecutor that drew up the stipulations of Matraimov\u2019s agreement with the official investigation?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to online social network profiles and several sources, Berdibaev\u2019s brother is <\/span><b>Almazbek Berdibaev<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the former chief inspector of the southwest sector of the State Customs Service. Per the official agreement, Matraimov has committed to testify against the head of this sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the Facebook page of Orozbek, another user with the same surname, Nurgul Berdibaeva, refers to Almazbek as \u201cbrother\u201d under a post congratulating the latter on the occasion of his birthday. Nurgul\u2019s profile links to another user with the same surname, Meerim Berdibaeva, who in other posts Almazbek refers to as \u201csister\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3818 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/factcheck.kg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/pozdravlenie-ot-nurgul.png?resize=640%2C655&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"655\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/factcheck.kg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/pozdravlenie-ot-nurgul.png?w=744&amp;ssl=1 744w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/factcheck.kg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/pozdravlenie-ot-nurgul.png?resize=293%2C300&amp;ssl=1 293w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Central Election Committee (CEC)\u2019s website, <\/span><b>both Almazbek and Meerim are connected with Mekenim Kyrgyzstan, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.occrp.org\/en\/the-matraimov-kingdom\/a-powerful-kyrgyz-clans-political-play\">political party<\/a> closely affiliated with Matraimov through his brother, the politician Iskender.\u00a0 The CEC website also shows that they have the same patronymic \u201cKulmurzaevichi\u201d (i.e., they all have the same father). which the CEC subsequently annulled. The results saw Mekenim Kyrgyzstan, alongside the government-affiliated Birimdik party, dominate the Kyrgyz parliament to the exclusion of opposition parties, prompting <a
